Escrima or Arnis ( Also known as Kali etc depending on which region of the Philippines it was practiced in) is the ancient weapons form of Martial Art of the Philippines.
The art is practised using empty hands, to master co-ordination and also practiced with sticks. There are many gains for a Martial Artist in handling weapons, as weapons enhance the martial artists awareness skills which are very important in any martial art. The student of Arnis learns to respect his weapons as well as his opponent and ensure that his weapons should never fall from his hands. The Arnis sticks, act as an extension to ones body and therefore great care must be used in handling the weapons. Skills in handling the sticks develops confidence in the martial artist, besides developing stamina, co-ordnation, correct distancing from ones opponent and accuracy in striking targets. The student of Arnis very soon begins to understand the importance of getting the timing right and this skill is valuable in sparring or an aggressive street situation.
